2001 Review from Total VW Magazine
By Richard Knott
May 2001, time for Jim and Rich to organise Bournemouth's second Beachbuggin' and to blend the mix of VW's, sea, sand and (some) sun.
This time the show moved along the Promenade to the head of the pier. A busy spot close to the surf café and right in the centre of Bournemouth. As a result not only was the area packed with a great display of aircooled VW's and smiling owners, but also a number of bemused day trippers who were sampling the world of the VW show for the first time!
Here Howard Rose's formerly featured and totally stock '66 was tro be seen rubbing noses with '48 webers and five lug sprint stars whilst over the way there was an early late 60's bug with a big motor, big spoiler and big fuchs. A good variety of cars to further stimulate my over active mind. Add this to the Judson engined type 1 Karmann Ghia and it was overload time.
Cars not entering the show 'n' shine were spread along the prom, beyond the trade stands. Here, the Southern Dune Buggy Club put on a worthy display of excellent buggies; my favourite had to be the oh so 70's green meteflake car shod with period American racing wheels. Once again the local Daan Zauf Klub assembled a good line up, confirming the strength of the South Coast scene.
The single line of VW's stretching as far as you could see, gave space to some great cars. For me the blue early'ish 60's Bug with Chrome 356 wheels, nipple hubcaps and chequered bib stole the day; I gotta have some of those wheels for the notch! Check out the pictures to find your favourite.
Type 2's of all sorts were out in force. The green double door bay window panel van was clean and straight whilst not yet restored the high top split panel van was equally desirable. Transported to the show via Type 2 was the very scary motor bike engined chopper, proving the broadmindedness and resourcefulness of the aircooled VW owner! All in all another good day out in Bournemouth and well done once again to Jim and Rich. Roll on BeachBuggin' 2002. See you there.
... and we'll show it here
